About - Pulikkal Palliative Care Clinic

We can’t predict when and to whom the symptom of deadly diseases like cancer will appear in the body. Such situation make all our plans topsy-turvy. Long treatments that makes the body as well as the mind weak, striving for the money, severe pain, loneliness – we can only pray Allah not to put us in such a condition. However, can’t we do anything for the miserable victims of the diseases?

How relieving it is to have a group of humanitarians with them as helping hands. This understanding is the motivation behind the palliative care.

Pulikkal palliative care clinic the link centre of the palliative care clinic of Calicut Medical College has been working as the relieving treatment centre of very many patients who suffer from severe pain

Pulikkal Palliative Care Association is a vibrant group giving succour to the poor with terminal diseases. It is a community based Palliative Care Programme moving with the contribution of the generous public. Which was launched 2006. Pulikkal is a predominantly Muslim populated area where terminal disease, especially cancer is on the increase.

Palliative Care team comprises a group of trained volunteers of the locality, joining hands with nurses and paramedical staff. They work with devotion under the direct supervision of the doctors. Palliative Care Clinic receives patients who are advised to go home after long term treatment obviously because the chances of recovery are remote despite the relief measures. The Palliative Care programme endeavours to integrate physical, psychological, social and spiritual aspects of the care, so the patients may come to terms with their impending death with resignation. It is not adding days to their lives but adding life to their days.

At Pulikkal Palliative Care Clinic we receive patients who experience the agony of incurable diseases, bedridden due to spinal injury, paralysis and old age and people with chronic psychiatric disorders. They get expert medical advice and treatment and can share their psychological, social and spiritual needs with volunteers. Necessary medicines are given. All these services are rendered free.

A home care team including doctors, nurses and volunteers make a weekly visit to patients houses who are too weak to come to the clinic. Volunteers often visit the house every patient to know the condition of patent and the family. The basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, education etc. of the family are solved with the co-operation of the local society.

Funding

A sum of Rs. 2 lacks is required for monthly expenses of the clinic. The main source of funding is the contribution of the generous public, which starts form one rupee.
